Registration of Landscape Operatives

Health & Safety and Environmental Awareness Course

The ROLO Scheme (Registration of Land based Operatives) is open to anyone who works in the Land based Industry. This includes labour only, self-employed and employees of companies.

On completion of a One day Land based Health & Safety Course, a card (including photograph) would be issued to the applicant, similar to a credit card. This is issued to an individual and will be valid for 5 years. Any other relevant training, i.e. NPTC Pesticide, chain saw, ride on mowers etc would also be acknowledged on the card.

The Department of Trade & Industry made it a ‘duty of care’ that all trade bodies ensure that their members were adequately trained in Health & Safety and that all employers should show that personnel are properly trained.

Who Does It Apply To?

It applies to a wide range of Landbased Businesses in the following sectors:

  • Landscape Construction & Horticultural Landscape Maintenance

  • Arboriculture

  • Pesticides

  • Ecology and Environmental Management

  • Amenity

The aims of the scheme are:

  • Provide a means of identification

  • Keeping a record of workers in the landbased industry who have achieved a recognized level of competence

  • Raise the standards of Health and Safety to reduce the risks and accidents throughout the industry

  • Encourage employers to use only ROLO card holders who have accredited Health and Safety Training.

The Benefits of the Scheme Are:

The ROLO scheme is an individual registration card, and provides the card holder with the following benefits:

  • Recognition of skills, competence and qualifications

  • Improved health and safety awareness

  • Improved employment prospects

  • Identification of training needs to improve or add to existing skills

  • Improved employment prospects as your prospective employer will be able to see your qualifications on one card

  • It may reduce insurance premiums for the self-employed

The ROLO health and safety course is a one day (7 hours) approved health and safety awareness course. The course is required to have been completed less than 2 years before application for a CSCS Blue Card or LISS Card.

Who is it suitable for?

This course is suitable for anyone working in the landscape sector including basic operatives, skilled craftsmen, team leaders, chargehands, foremen and business owners.

Objectives

  1. At the end of the course, students will:

  2. Have an understanding of Health and Safety Legislation

  3. Be able to apply the legislation to their workplace

  4. Recognise site hazards they may encounter at work and the control measures that may prevent injury

  5. Understand the health hazards they may be exposed to at work

  6. Identify sources of other information Understand the impact of their work activities on the environment

Course content:

  • Why & how accidents happen

  • Core H&S and Environmental legislation

  • RIDDOR and Accident Reporting

  • Control measures, including risk assessments & method statements

  • Regulations including working at height; noise; vibration; manual handling; PUWER; COSHH; Electricity; CDM

  • Underground & overhead services

  • PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)

  • LOLER

  • Fire safety

  • Lone working

  • Environmental awareness & protection

Assessment:

Multi-choice examination with a pass mark is 75%

Course Cost:

£155.00 / person + VAT (subject to minimum numbers and location)

Maximum of 12 candidates on each course.
